Walk through rooms

Making the most of space

I know 'walk through rooms' sounds like it's referring to just about every room in the house, but what we’re getting at is utilising minimal or wasted space and turning it into a functional area. An example of this is that more and more we are building master bedrooms with a walk through wardrobe into an ensuite instead of two separate rooms.

Quite often we have a longer narrower space, or a smaller bedroom with less wall space, so having one doorway for both rooms off of the bedroom can help maximise space in the bedroom.

One negative perception some people have about this arrangement is steam moulding their clothes, however with modern ventilation systems we have personally never heard of this as an issue.

Another great way to use something like a hallway is to have a study nook in it. I have to admit that when I was building my house I was not a big fan of the idea of a ‘desk in the middle of everything’, however I have a small hallway to my master bedroom and created a walk through study area in the hallway, it’s perfect! So I guess the point to all of this is not to be afraid to think outside of the box when you are designing your house, and it is a doubly important reminder to engage with an architect as well as a builder early in the piece before things are set in stone. We have some great ideas we can share!
